Making small rooms big - our recommendations

Small rooms can be a challenge. You feel cramped; the ceiling often literally falls on your head. As a result, the small rooms in the house are often neglected and used less. But that doesn't have to be the case! Because the perceived size of a room does not depend on the actual square meters. The design of the room determines how it is perceived! A clever choice of colors, clever furnishings and optical tricks create the illusion of space and openness. In today's MöbelFirst magazine, we reveal our tips on how to make the most of your small rooms and make them appear larger. How to turn a small room into a real space miracle in no time at all.

Success with bright colors

Do you remember our article on the dark living trend Dark Academia? In this interior design style, the rooms are deliberately dark. This creates cosiness and intimacy. But it also makes the room look smaller. In small rooms, you should definitely opt for the complete opposite. White, beige, cream or pastel shades: light colors are in demand! The "basic structure" of the room in particular should be light in color. From the wall color to the furniture to the window and door frames: Make sure you opt for light-colored models! These reflect the light and make the room appear more open and friendly. Of course, you can still set accents with stronger colors. However, it is better to use individual decorative elements for this.

The ceiling of the room should also be painted a light color. This visually increases the available space. Reinforce this effect by paying attention to vertical lines. Use striped wallpaper and high shelves. This automatically draws the eye upwards. The eye is given the impression of almost infinite height. This prevents the perception that the ceiling is falling on your head. You immediately feel more at ease in the room.

To make the room appear wider, you should also choose a light-colored floor covering. Light-colored laminate or parquet is a good choice. Large tiles made of natural stone are also ideal. However, colorful and heavy carpets are a no-go! Instead, choose a plain carpet in light colors. This will make the walls look further apart. You should avoid patterned carpets.

You should also avoid heavy curtains. Light, transparent fabrics or blinds let the sun in while still maintaining your privacy. Does the room receive little daylight? Then you should make sure that the room is flooded with artificial light. Many small light sources such as floor lamps or wall lamps are a good solution here.

Be sure to use one or more mirrors. They reflect the light and visually double the space. Place a large mirror opposite a window. This enhances the effect. In the bedroom, a closet with mirrored doors can be integrated perfectly. A mirrored sliding-door wardrobe is particularly suitable. It also saves space, as the doors do not protrude into the room when the sliding-door wardrobe is opened. This creates plenty of storage space in the bedroom and kills two birds with one stone.

Go for minimalism

Small spaces should never be overloaded. The signs here are all about minimalism! Reduce the amount of furniture and especially the decoration to a minimum. We also advise you to use multifunctional pieces of furniture that offer storage space. Here are chests of drawers and sideboards are a good choice. Any clutter can be hidden away and the room looks calmer. You should also opt for furniture with delicate shapes and slender legs. These look light and take up less space overall. Transparent furniture made of glass or acrylic also visually enlarges the room. The transparent surfaces are barely noticeable to the eye. The pieces of furniture therefore appear almost non-existent. Also make sure that the choice of furniture is adapted to the available space. Furniture that is too large and bulky can quickly have an overwhelming effect. You should therefore definitely avoid wall units or massive sofas and armchairs.
