Mart Stam, der künstlerische Urheber des Freischwingers, hat mit seinem S 43 eine völlig neue Sitzgelegenheit geschaffen, die seit den 1930er Jahren von Thonet vertrieben wird. Die Konstruktion besteht aus einem freischwingenden Stahlrohrgestell, das von Sitz- und Rückenschalen aus Formholz komplementiert wird. Die geradlinige Form und die Sparsamkeit bei der Konstruktion gehören zu einer Reihe an neuartigen Möbeldesigns der 1930er Jahre, die sich unter der Stilrichtung „Neue Sachlichkeit“ fassen lassen.
