Dark Academia - Ready for the dark living trend?
Dark, mystical and melancholy is not your thing? We at MöbelFirst think so! The corresponding interior design trend is called Dark Academia and we are big fans. It first appeared on social media in 2015 and has been widely popular ever since. The aesthetic is inspired by the lifestyle of English and American private schools and elite universities before the mid-20th century. Dark Academia can be integrated into all areas of life: from literature and fashion to home furnishings. In our magazine today, we show you how you can easily implement the trend in your home.
How to create the Dark Academy style in your home
The color palette of Dark Academia is dark and muted. Dark brown, dark green and Bordeaux red are predominant. Even black is not a no-go and may be used. In short: everything is allowed - except bright colors! The colors are not just limited to the furniture - be sure to design the walls accordingly.
Wood, leather and velvet are the dominant materials. Don't be afraid to use these materials and mix them wildly. The room may appear heavy and overloaded.
The trend can be implemented particularly well in the living room, office or home library. However, small rooms should be avoided at all costs. The dark look makes them look even smaller. When choosing furniture, you should stay true to the color palette. Make sure you opt for heavy wooden furniture! Desks or secretaries made of walnut or mahogany are well suited. Massive bookshelves are also essential. These add the ultimate academic touch! Leather sofas and leather armchairs complete the look. Chesterfield-style seating is particularly suitable.
The lighting design is essential for rooms with a dark academy look. Use subdued lighting to create an atmospheric ambience. Floor lamps or wall lamps with large shades achieve this effect. Fancy a chandelier? Then here's your chance! A chandelier as a light source does not provide too much light. The intimate atmosphere of the room is not disturbed.
Furnishing trend for decoration lovers
To achieve the dark, intellectual look of the living trend, one thing is definitely needed: books. Read or not, it doesn't matter, but books are essential. You can find inspiration for this in second-hand bookshops. The older the books, the better. Do you like browsing at flea markets? Then you'll have a lot of fun decorating! Old globes, busts or antique writing implements. Everything will find its place in your new furnishings. Go for gold items, as this creates a contrast to the dark colors and sets accents. Heavy rugs go well with this rugs and curtains made of thick fabric. This will give the room additional coziness.
